Colorado (nicknamed the Centennial state) is a landlocked contiguous continental US state located in the Mountain sub-region and the West region of the United States. Colorado borders the US states of Wyoming to the north, Nebraska to the northeast, Utah to the west, Kansas to the east, Oklahoma to the southeast, New Mexico to the south and Arizona to the southwest at the Four Corners.

The state of Colorado is divided into 64 counties, the 24th state (tied with Louisiana, which has parishes instead of counties) with the highest number of counties. The capital and largest city of Colorado is Denver.

With a total area of 269,601 km2, Colorado is the 8th largest US state in area, the 21th most populous US state, with a total of 5,607,039 inhabitants (July 2017 estimates), but only the 37th most densely populated state, with 20.9 inhabitants per square kilometer.

Colorado was admitted into the Union on August 1st, 1876, as the 38th of the current 50 US states.
