Michigan (nicknamed the Great Lake(s) state) is a contiguous continental US state, divided into two peninsulas, located in the East North Central sub-region and the Midwest region of the United States. Michigan borders the US states of Wisconsin to the southwest (via Upper Peninsula), Indiana and Ohio to the south (via Lower Peninsula). Michigan also has maritime border with Minnesota and Illinois.
The state of Michigan is divided into 83 counties, the 15th state with the highest number of counties. The capital of Michigan is Lansing and his largest city is Detroit.
With a total area of 250,487 km2, Michigan is the 11th largest US state in area, the 10th most populous US state, with a total of 9,962,311 inhabitants (July 2017 estimates) and the 17th in population density, with only 68 inhabitants per square kilometer.
Michigan was admitted into the Union on January 26th, 1837, as the 26th of the current 50 US states.
